Summary: 

The Fort Mojave Indian Tribe is seeking a positive and task oriented individual to successfully oversee the Building Department. The Building Inspector performs field inspections of industrial, commercial, and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling to assure compliance with applicable codes and regulations of the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe and various City, County, State and Federal agencies, and ensures construction is in conformity with approved plans and specifications. In addition, performs complex inspection duties in several trade specialties such as plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and structural; assures proper and safe installation of routine and complex building systems; and coordinates inspection activities with other Tribal departments. Makes field review of plans and specifications and ascertains conformance to Uniform Building Code, Plumbing, Electrical and Mechanical Codes, and pertinent provisions of Tribal, Federal, State and County Health and environmental ordinances; confers with architects, contractors, builders, and the general public in the field and office; explains and interprets requirements and restrictions; maintains records and prepare reports; and performs other duties as required and necessary for this job.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Have knowledge or a willingness to obtain knowledge of Tribal Building and Environmental Codes.
  • Knowledge of accepted safety standards and methods of building construction; building and related codes and ordinances enforced by the City, including the Uniform Building Code, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanic Codes, and State energy regulations; principles and techniques of building inspection work.
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques to examine workmanship and materials, and detect deviations from plans, regulations, and standard construction practices; determine that construction systems conform to Tribal Code requirements; read and interpret building plans, specifications, and building codes; advise on standard construction methods and requirements; maintain cooperative working relations with builder, contractors, and the general public; enforce necessary regulations with firmness and tact; independently operate telephone and two-way radio equipment.
  • Ensures that files are kept and maintained in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintain and manage the Building Department.
  • Oversee the organization, placement, and care of department supplies and equipment.
  • Review program goals and objectives.
  • Manage and oversee office tasks: phone calls, receptionist duties, and events.

    Competency:

    To perform the job successfully, and individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • An awareness or willingness to learn of the Government, Culture, Laws, Rules, and History of the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe.
  • Knowledge of FMIT Building Codes, and ability to reference / ensure adherence to appropriate Tribal, Federal, State, County, and City codes.
  • A base knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • An ability to properly manage time, complete tasks, and multi-task.
  • An ability to manage stress under pressure.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

    Qualifications:

Knowledge or willingness to learn Tribal codes and provide support to department sponsored initiatives required. To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

Education/Experience:

High School Graduate or GED equivalent – Required

Ability to obtain Building Inspector Certificate issued by the International Code Council (ICC) within (1) year of appointment – Required.

Three (3) to Five (5) years of experience in the FMIT Building Department or agency of similar capacity – Required.

Driver’s License – Required

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint preferred to perform this job successfully.

Certificates and Licenses:

Ability to perform this job requires an individual to have a valid state Drivers License insurable under the Tribe’s insurance plan and passing a drug test and adhere to the Tribe’s Drug-Free Policy. 

Work Environment:

Position requires prolonged or intermittent sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, eye/hand coordination, and repetitive hand movement. The incumbent may frequently drive to different sites and locations; when working outdoors the incumbent may encounter extreme weather conditions, including, wet, hot, cold, wind, snow, ice, and heavy vehicle traffic. The need to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds is required. Additionally, the position requires both near and far vision when inspecting work, operating assigned equipment and the ability to accurately perceive sounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate when indoors and moderate to loud when outdoors. The incumbent may use fuel, cleaning and lubricating chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.
